Toronto is the largest city in Canada, and the capital of the province of Ontario. The name of the city is thought to be taken from the Iroquois word "tkaronto" meaning "where trees stand in water", a fishing technique the Huron tribes had used to trap fish in what is now Lake Simcoe just north of the present day city.

Toronto is located along the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario in southeastern Ontario. It was incorporated as a city in 1834 on the site of Fort York.

Often considered the financial capital of Canada, Toronto is an international center of banking and finance. The Toronto Stock Exchange is headquartered here. Telecommunications, information technology, and publishing are also important industries. Due to its location, Toronto is also a major transportation and distribution center.
